How to Choose a Bed for an Older Dog

Orthopedic bolster dog bed

Senior dogs spend a lot of their day asleep. As they get older, bony elbows and hips feel a hard floor or a flat, worn-out cushion a lot more than they used to. The right bed won't turn back the clock, but it can make every nap more comfortable.

Here's what to look for.

1. Support that doesn't flatten

Stuffed and fiber-filled beds look cozy, but they flatten fast and leave older joints resting on the floor. Look for memory foam or high-density orthopedic foam, which spreads your dog's weight evenly instead of letting hips and shoulders sink through.

A quick test: press your fist into the middle of the bed. If you can feel the floor, it's too thin for a senior dog.

2. Easy in, easy out

A tall, puffy bed can be a small obstacle course for a stiff dog. Choose a bed with a low front edge so they can walk on rather than climb in. If your dog likes to lean or rest their chin, raised bolsters on the sides give them something to settle against.

3. A waterproof liner and a washable cover

Older dogs have more accidents, and that's nobody's fault. A waterproof liner protects the foam inside, and a removable, machine-washable cover means a mess is a quick wash instead of a ruined bed.

4. The right size

Measure your dog while they're stretched out asleep, from nose to the base of the tail, then add 6 to 12 inches. Many senior dogs like to sprawl, and a bed that's too small forces them to curl up tight when they'd rather stretch out.

5. The right spot

Where the bed goes matters almost as much as the bed itself:

  • Keep it near the family. Older dogs like being close to their people.
  • Avoid drafts and cold floors, like spots near doors or on bare tile.
  • Put it somewhere easy to reach, without stairs in the way.
  • On slippery floors, use a rug underneath or a bed with a non-slip bottom so it doesn't slide when they get up.

Hot sleepers and travelers

Some dogs run warm and seek out cool floors. A cooling mat gives them that cool spot with some cushion. For car rides and visits, a light fleece comfort mat rolls up and goes anywhere.
